CIA CREST Archive

CIA CREST Archive Header

This page contains documents obtained from CIA’s CREST archive. The documents were first released and declassified on 1999 following  Nazi War Crimes Disclosure Act that made CIA release large numbers of documents regarding Nazi war crimes and crimes of Imperial Japan. Also among the released documents where documents regarding CIA’s operations in Eastern Europe and Soviet Union. Most of these documents have been published by CIA internet archive  and on other sites.

We have done research of these documents to find evidence and examples of use of radio communications and cryptographic messages. The files seen as most relevant have been published in the list. The research is still ongoing and we will add more files showing historical use of radio communications by intelligence agencies. As we encounter  more declassified CIA material we will upgrade this page.

Our goal in this gather enough proof of historical use of cryptographic radio messages commonly known as numbers stations. In future as documents from Soviet KGB will be released into public we will create a similar section about use of numbers stations by Soviet block.

The documents from cases so far are from time period from 1945 to 1960 when CIA debuted in the intelligence warfare and started to rival Soviet intelligence agencies. The missions approached by CIA ranged from recruitment campaigns, stay behind operations in preparation for a possible war with Soviet Union to wide range espionage missions in Eastern Europe and Soviet Union, such as aiding the anti-Soviet resistance.

The names of the entries correspond to their given case names by CIA archive. The cases contain mission files and personal profiles. The personal profiles are CIA agents, captured Nazi agents during WW2.
