G16 is set up like the rest of West German BND’s number stations were. The “Two Letter” stations began sometime in the late 1960’s and sent transmissions for a large amount of different agents. The station was nicknamed ‘Two Letter’ after it’s many station ID’s. G16 has been inactive since 1999.
Recording Sample
Note: In the Conet Project with this station and other number stations in Family 6 there is an inaccurate transcription of the message announcements. In the notes of the Conet Project they list this as “Es folgen talon für”. This is not the proper term, and is a bad German translation. The actual announcement is “Es folgen Mitteilungen für”, meaning ‘messages for … are following’.)
Schedule
G16 operated 24 hours a day, sending messages in 30 minute intervals. The majority of it’s first broadcasts were in the early to mid evening on 3-7 MHz. Over it’s lifetime, the station used many ID’s that were spelled out in phonetic. Each station had numerous agent ID’s, see the chart below to see the recipients for each station. G15 was given its own ENIGMA ID since it had such a large number of recipients for the station ID ‘PN.’
